IT Myths Busted: “Turning It Off and On Again” Doesn’t Fix Everything
We’ve all heard it before. You’ve got a tech issue, you call IT, and the first question is, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” Sometimes that quick reset does the trick and everything starts working again.

But the truth is, more often than not, there’s something bigger happening behind the scenes. Technology is complex, and oversimplifying the problem can create more frustration than solutions. That’s why it’s worth taking a closer look at a few common IT myths that tend to cause more confusion than they should.
Myth 1: “If it’s working fine now, we don’t need to update it”
That might feel true in the moment, but updates aren’t just about new features. They patch up vulnerabilities and keep your systems secure.
When you delay them, you’re opening the door to bugs and cyber threats. If your systems haven’t been updated in a while, they’re probably not as fine as they look.
Myth 2: “We’ve got antivirus, so we’re protected”
Antivirus is a good start, but it’s not enough on its own. These days, most attacks come through phishing emails or dodgy websites that slip past basic protection.
Real security means layers. That includes firewalls, monitoring, regular backups, and making sure your staff know what to look out for.
Myth 3: “IT support is only needed when something breaks”
This is one of the most damaging myths we see. Reactive support means waiting for problems to cause chaos.
Good IT is proactive. It prevents downtime, flags issues before they become expensive, and keeps everything running smoothly in the background.
We’ve heard it all

At SOTS, we work with businesses every day who’ve been putting up with IT issues for far too long. If you’re fed up of being told to reboot your laptop while nothing actually changes, it’s time for a proper fix.
